Rattan Tray

La cena è pronta, signora. Se desidera venire a tavola…
Lei non ha detto niente. Se ne stava immobile, appoggiata al bastone. Sono andato a prenderla sotto braccio, l’ho aiutata a sedersi. Lei s’è limitata a borbottare qualcosa. Sono sceso in cucina a prenderle il VASSOIO, gliel’ho messo davanti. Lei l’ha guardato con la coda dell’occhio, senza toccare nulla.
Orhan Pamuk, La casa del silenzio, 1983

Rattan is a precious vegetable fiber, obtained from the processing of some species of climbing palms of Southeast Asia, not to be confused with wicker (finer) and bamboo (hollow and more rigid).

This fiber is collected in the summer, cleaned, boiled in water and left to dry in the sun; once dried, it will take on the characteristic ocher color. If desired, for gaps in processing, the bark can be removed. The latter, reduced into small strips, is used to produce the famous Vienna straw, or as a tie for craftsmanship.

The main feature of this beautiful aquatic plant is its malleability, resistance and lightness, which make it suitable for craftsmanship to produce furnishing accessories. Even today the cane is bent by heating it over a fire manually.
