Gedda Silver sculpture by Pietro Consagra

Pietro Consagra made, as a sculptor, one of the most radical and significant choices of all the plastic art of the second half of the twentieth century: frontality.

“The frontality was born within me as an alternative to the totem, that is to the sculpture that had to be born in the center of an ideal space. By presenting a different urban planning, namely that of frontality, I removed myself from the intention of occupying a space at the center of which to build something, a converging point of attention. I felt the frontality as a downsizing of the claims that had accumulated around sculpture, religious, social, past or future established orders; I wanted to unload the sculpture from all these pretensions of symbol to create a more direct, frontal relationship, face to face, with the viewer … “.

His sculpture is a solitary presence, preceded and followed by emptiness and silence but, precisely for this reason, an intriguing presence with which to confront, with which to establish an inner dialogue.
